No Sub-stitute for perfection

We love our subs in Somerville - I'm not talking about those poor substitute teachers that the kids take advantage of every day - I'm talking about those delicious submarine sandwiches that we all crave...so naturally I have to talk about Angelina's Sub Shop in Teele Square.

Still thriving and making subs that taste the same as they did back in 1967, when I first sank my teeth into one, is Angelina's Sub Shop on Holland Street. On a recent trip to "Angie's" to get a pizza for my boys, I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Steve Stamides. Steve told me that Angelina's has been there since the 1950's. The pizza oven arrived in 1992 and Steve took over the ownership in 2006. He says: "if you can put on an apron and spend one day behind the counter, you can handle anything in life." It gets pretty hectic, especially on peak Friday nights. You have to be running on all cylinders. You can tell Steve has a passion for the business.

When a new counter person comes on, Steve tells them to forget anything they ever knew about the food business - the Angelina's way is the only way. Consistency seems to be the key to Angelina's Pizza and Sub's success. You can see all the fresh food right out in the open and the folks who work there are both friendly and quick to serve.

Steve tells me that the most popular hot subs are the cheeseburger, steak and cheese and chicken cutlet parm. The most popular cold sub? You guessed it - the Italian. Steve is at Angelina's 6 days a week. He can tell what certain people want when he hears their voice on the phone or when they come through the door: "hello small steak and cheese with pepper and onions..."

Thanks to this article I contacted former Kiss 108 traffic reporter Judi Papparelli and we spoke for the first time in years. I remember Judi came to Angie's with me back in 1993, because she fell in love with the food when she was attending Tufts University - she told me that she and her boyfriend would order a large steak and cheese with onions, extra mayo and a little ketchup - and go pick it up. Her exact words were: "best subs in the world...nothing else even comes close..."

As I said before, the taste of an Angelina's sub hasn't changed in the 40 years I have been enjoying them - small, regular, half jumbo, jumbo - whatever size your appetite is - they will satisfy it. It took me 40 years to figure out that "jumbo" was Tufts University related, as in Jumbo the elephant.

Angelina's and Nan's could get you in trouble back in the day because of the closeness to the schools. If you cut class to grab a quick sub, you'd better be able to pass the smell test - if you had onions on your breath; you were as good as bagged.

Steve's goal is for Angelina's to supply a consistently good, quality product. Let me say that he has succeeded with flying cold cuts. He keeps things just the way we like them - fresh, mouth watering, tasty and satisfying.

The only thing better that a hot Angelina's slice or a signature sub, is getting that coveted parking spot right in front. I am happy that I have passed on the tradition of enjoying the taste of Angelina's to my boys. Take a walk up Holland Street. and give yourself a treat.

I went through different phases of favorite subs at Angie's throughout the years — for a long time I was a ham and cheese with lettuce and mayo man, then I switched to roast beef and mayo, and then settled in with the old stand by - a "Jimmy Del Ponte" (small Italian)!
